Book of clippings, 1898-1914.

Scrapbook in an old ledger book, 1898-1914, documenting his life, family, and career as a newspaper worker, editor, or owner in Adrian (Mich.), Mont., and Wy.; Methodism; the Epworth League; the lynching he witnessed in Mont. in 1901 of James E. Brady; national and Mont. politics; and the deaths of his brother, David Metcalf, Jr., and brother-in-law, J. Horace Wilson, in 1904. Glued to the front cover is the handwritten note, "Book of Clippings. Begun Aug. 6, 1899." Also included is a Pan-American Expositon official daily program for July 23, 1901, inside the back cover. The official returns of Carbon County (Mont.) election of Nov. 6, 1900 is also included. Most of the newspaper clippings are from the Adrian Telegram, various newspapers which James worked for or owned, and out-of-state newspaper in which his letters or articles were published. Reprints of a photograph of Teddy Roosevelt, 1914, and Main Street, Helena (Mont.), undated are inside the front cover.

James was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Festus R. Metcalf. Festus was a wealthy dry goods merchant. James graduated from Adrian College in 1897 and worked as manager of job printing for the Adrian Times. He also worked in Chicago. In 1899 he married Carrie E. Wilson. They moved to Mont., where James worked as editor of the Picket (Red Lodge, Mont.) and the Daily Record (Helena, Mont.) in 1901.
